you know... of all the people i know and of all the birthdays i've had who would have believed one of the most thoughtful presents i'd ever get would come from 2 girls who live 7000 miles away
Seriously twisted mix of high-finance, MMORPGs, and information security all wrapped in a classic spy/crime story.
Glasshouse
Charles Stross
I love this guy's ideas. Mindwiped identity bending futurescape with a pointed take on modern times. This one's way up the recommended list.
Iron Sunrise
Charles Stross
Sequel to Singularity Sky - more great hard-sf from one of the absolute best in the genre. Love it.
Pattern Recognition
William Gibson
Not his strongest work - a modern fiction piece with some interesting ideas but it feels disjointed somehow.
Starfish
Peter Watts
Oh look, he's reading more dark hardsf... big surprise. This one brings strong psychotic-biochemistry-fu. Bring your brain
Little Brother
Cory Doctorow
A modern 1984 for teens... good layman tech and a great take on the idiocy of the war on terra
Accelerando
Charles Stross
Chunky short-story format that blazes with ideas and pace. Great book.
Singularity Sky
Charles Stross
Interesting SF space opera... an ideas book the way old Niven was in that the plot isnt really that important.
The Sunrise Lands
SM Stirling
The 4th in a line of Silly post-apocalyptic alternate history with a goofy premise taken too far... but fun to read.
Blindsight
Peter Watts
Rough and dark, but it grows on you... like a tumor. Post-gibson cyberpunk noire, the gripping hand in reverse - only really really really creepy. Dont plan on sleeping well after this one.
The Android's Dream
John Scalzi
Pratchett/Adams as hard SF - with all the humor of both. I loved the concept of the AI - bout time someone decided to attack the Wintermute conundrum backwards.
Thirteen
Richard Morgan
Not Kovacs, but interesting all the same. Dystopian take on the American political schism and where it heads - taking some old Dick ideas much further down the road.
